I would prefer a solution where I didn’t have to remove the slate to secure the connection but the rafter appear to be the strongest structural element to tie to? Are there other better options? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. We typically tie rafters down with hurricane clips at the ends. The building is also in a hurricane prone country (150mph wind speeds), so the uplift is pretty high. Based on what I have seen of the existing roof it appears that the slate just rests on the laths, there is no sheathing - just laths (see attached image). I had initially thought it was a rafter to rafter connection.įor clarity the existing roof is a slate roof (see attached general slate roof detail). He is nailing directly into the sheathing and not the existing rafter itself (or am I misinterpreting this). RE: New Rafter Connection into Existing - Different Roof Pitches jayrod12 (Structural) 14 Dec 20 16:29Īh, I think I see where my confusion lied regarding Harbringer’s detail. Fill the holes with quick-set concrete in a cylindrical shape, then place post anchors while the concrete is still wet. Dig holes on the ground for each support post spot with a width of 12-18 inches and a depth of 18 inches. Although if this can be changed into a bolted connection through the centroid that would be cleaner.Ĭan your proposed configuration be used with the two bolt scenario? Adding more 2x to make U would make the wall/post stronger. First, prepare the foundation for your gable porch roof. The way I was initially thinking was just to have the rafters side by side and do a through bolt connection (pretty simple for the contractor to do, see attached). Would you be able to provide more information (a front view) of the connection detail? Harbringer, I like that your proposed solution is a connection through the centroid of the rafters. The reason I was inclined toward the bolted connection is that the local building code recommends 1x 3/8” bolt for new rafters of this span to connect to existing.īoth rafters (new and existing) are timber 2圆’s.Īlthough the code only calls for one bolt I was considering 2 to add in redundancy. The roofing cement will resist possible leaks overnight. After nailing down these two boards, dab roofing cement on the nails and along the outside edge. At this point, we can determine precisely where and how much of the roofing we need to remove once the eave is trimmed back and the exact bearing point location for the rafters is determined. Tying the new roof into the existing roof. Many building departments require a local architect or engineer to design plans for porch roofs because of the increased snow, roof and wind loads created by adding a roof. Thanks all for the responses so far. You'll need to install a valley board or nailer over the old roof shingles to create a solid nailing surface for installing jack rafters (see drawing). The two outside rafters are placed and squared into position. Frame and sheathe the addition roof, and snap a line on the existing shingles 2 inches above the valley. Install trusses to meet the eave of the house and nail 2 valley boards into place, securing with roofing cement. You will need to attach the porch rafters to the house roof rafters and replace the roofing and flashing. To tie into existing roof shingles use a cut valley. If you are tying the shed roof into an existing roof on the house, you will need to remove the shingles and sheathing to expose the roof framing. Sometimes an intersecting roof is framed over the existing main roof deck rather being tied directly into the framing of the main roof. Rafters should be attached to the header beam using hurricane ties. I have a few ideas but would like to seek other advice as to what everyone else would do. I bought a repo and it is a modular home. Support posts should be spaced less than 8' apart and be located on top of properly sized frost footings. I have an existing porch (wooden) on my house and was wanting to get advice on how to attach a shed roof onto my existing house roof. The opposite side of the porch roof will be supported by a header beam that is installed parallel to the house on top of 6圆 support posts. But, always keep in mind that proper tying is very necessary for your new shingles. Either seal with the new shingles after you remove the old ones or add a layer of new shingles with the existing ones. cut out notch (female) from bottom of new joists to meet cleats (male) on existing roof. Draw a line and make sure to cut the below area along with the shingles. If you are tying the roof directly to a house wall, you can install a ledger board with flashing and install rafter ties to attach the rafters at the appropriate angles or use engineered trusses. Now, new shingles are ready to be nailed down. Shed roofs project as a single plane roof pitched away from the house. Flat roofs are more susceptible to leaking than pitched roofs. Some shed roofs are designed to be nearly flat. Always try to match the house roof pitch angle and overhang for your shed roof.
